In 1853 St Deroin was laid out by its founder, Joseph Deroin, along the Missouri River. The village was one of many small settlements for river traffic in the 1870's. The town eventually died out by the 1920's due to the shifting river channel and an outbreak of cholera. Nearby is Indian Cave which dates back several thousands years. Within the cave are petroglyphs. The origin and period in history remain a mystery.
