Nebraska Homestead : Stopped at this homestead in western Nebraska to take a few photos with mom. I remembered our family stopped and looked around once as a kid and the place has always stuck in my mind. I guess I have been fascinated with old buildings since then. Ended up staying longer than planned, but got some great shots even with the less than desirable weather. We couldn't decide if the two parts of the house were built together or if another homesteader's house was moved in and simply added on to the original. It wasn't uncommon to move houses or barns by teams of horses or tractors back then. The two story house has tin siding and wider boards than the stuccoed portion. I welcome any comments or theories on this. The way the equipment is placed looks as if though the owner's just packed up and left. The sandy soil was not ideal for farming and most of the homesteaders could not make a living on their 640 acre claim. They ended up selling their land back to the cattle ranchers. I have seen some homesteads where the crop furrows could still be seen in the sand. Note how the sand has overcome the equipment. You can also see how the sand has shifted from around the house.

Ghosttowns : During our trip we stopped off at some ghosttowns in New Mexico and Colorado. We even took a guided tour to a few ghosttowns near Silverton, Colorado. We learned that the miners and railroaders were a hardy bunch and worked under extreme conditions.
